Revolutionizing Military Training: How Army E-Learning is Modernizing Soldier Education with ATIS Learning

The U.S. Army has officially launched ATIS Learning, a cutting-edge enterprise learning management system (LMS), marking a significant leap forward in Army E Learning initiatives. This platform is set to become the central hub for all asynchronous digital learning within the Army, replacing the legacy Army Learning Management System (ALMS) and ushering in a new era of modernized military education.

Developed by the Program Executive Office Enterprise Information Systems (PEO EIS), ATIS Learning was released on March 29th by the Army Training Information System (ATIS) product office. This transition supersedes ALMS, a system that, despite a 2019 update, had been in service for two decades. ALMS played a crucial role in delivering mandatory compliance training to every Soldier, civilian, and Army contractor. In the past year alone, it facilitated over 600 unique courses for nearly 1.5 million users, highlighting the immense scale of army-wide digital education.

ATIS Learning is engineered to provide a significantly more modern and intuitive experience for Soldiers and civilians managing their online training. The system boasts several key improvements over its predecessor, all designed to enhance the user experience and streamline military e learning:

  • Modernized User Interface: ATIS Learning features a visually updated interface with clearer visual cues and consistent button and icon design across the entire platform, making navigation more intuitive.
  • Improved Course Discovery: Finding relevant training is now easier than ever. Learners can efficiently search for both mandatory and elective courses using filters for type, category, or course name.
  • Simplified Course Completion Reporting: Accessing and managing training records is streamlined. Users can now directly access, download, and email their newly earned certificates directly from the homepage, simplifying reporting and record-keeping.

According to Tim Hale, product manager for ATIS at PEO EIS, “ATIS Learning represents the inaugural capability from the ATIS objective environment. We have successfully developed a learning management system poised to support the U.S. Army well into the 21st century, effectively addressing the evolving demands of a modern fighting force through enhanced army e learning capabilities.”

The launch of ATIS Learning is just the first phase of the ATIS product office’s broader vision. This summer, select Army units will have the opportunity to preview and provide valuable feedback on upcoming enhancements, including improved Digital Job Book and Small Unit Leader tools. These applications are designed to empower Soldiers and leaders at the platoon level and below with enhanced capabilities for viewing and inputting critical data, such as Army Combat Fitness Test scores, weapons qualifications, individual task completion, and body composition metrics. Crucially, this data will seamlessly integrate with the Digital Training Management System.

The development of ATIS leverages Agile software development methodologies, enabling continuous delivery of new features and improvements as they are ready. Looking ahead to 2024 and beyond, ATIS is committed to ongoing development and release of applications and products that will fundamentally transform how the Army manages, inputs, and utilizes training data and information, solidifying its commitment to advanced army e learning for the future.
