Learn Play Piano: Your First Steps to Musical Literacy

Just like letters seemed like a mystery when you first started school, music notes might appear confusing at first glance. But remember how quickly you learned to read words through curiosity and constant exposure? The same can happen with music! Music notes are simply the alphabet of music, and with a little practice, you’ll be reading them as easily as you’re reading these words right now.

Let’s begin with a familiar tune from “The Sound of Music” – Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do. You know this one, right? Try singing it aloud! In music, we represent these sounds with letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G. This song will help you grasp the pitch of each note and learn where they are on the piano keys.

Take a look at the music notes on the grand staff shown below.

That note right in the center of the staff is called Middle C. Find a comfortable spot in the middle of your piano. Let’s locate Middle C together and get familiar with the piano keys.

Quick Tip: The Treble Clef (the top part of the staff) represents higher notes, while the Bass Clef (the bottom part) is for lower notes. The treble clef notes (higher sounds) usually correspond to the keys to the right of Middle C and are often played with your right hand, unless a piece of music indicates otherwise.
