The Challenger Learning Center Of Tallahassee, a leading K-12 STEM outreach initiative of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, recently achieved remarkable success by hosting two engaging events as part of the Florida State University Festival of the Creative Arts (FCA). This marked the inaugural partnership between the Challenger Learning Center and the festival, uniting faculty, students, and staff from diverse disciplines to deliver interactive and artistic experiences centered around space exploration, creativity, and discovery.
On Saturday, February 8th, the Challenger Learning Center presented “Shakespeare and the Stars,” a distinctive blend of classical literature, space science, and various art forms. Attendees, including K-12 students and their families, delved into the cosmic connections within Shakespeare’s plays through interactive art projects, musical performances, and hands-on demonstrations. These activities were expertly guided by faculty, staff, and students from FSU’s English, Art Education, and Music Education departments, as well as the Challenger Learning Center and the renowned Flying High Circus, showcasing a truly interdisciplinary approach to learning.
The excitement continued on Sunday, February 9th, with “Storytime Under the Stars,” a captivating evening tailored for young children and families. Held under the immersive celestial environment of the Fogg Planetarium, guests were treated to beloved stories in a uniquely magical setting. Christine Hansen, program manager for the Askew Student Life Center, served as the special FCA Storybook Reader, captivating the audience with her lively storytelling and bringing narratives to life under a simulated starry sky.
Alan Hanstein, executive director of the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating, “This partnership highlighted the magic created when science, art, and imagination converge. Witnessing young minds ignite as they linked literature and creativity with the wonders of space perfectly embodies our mission. We are honored to collaborate with the Festival of the Creative Arts and anticipate further successes in the future.”
Iain Quinn, festival director and FSU Research Fellow in the Arts and Humanities, echoed this enthusiasm: “This first FCA collaboration with the Challenger Learning Center has been wonderfully successful. It was inspiring to see faculty and students from numerous colleges working together and engaging with the community. We eagerly anticipate next year’s collaboration.”
Both events underscore the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee’s dedication to offering innovative, interdisciplinary STEM/STEAM learning experiences to the Tallahassee community and beyond, fostering a love for science and art in learners of all ages.
