Since 1994, The CSJ Learning Connection for Adult Education, Inc., sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph, has been a vital resource in Brentwood, Long Island, NY, addressing the educational needs of immigrant women. In partnership with the Brentwood Public School District, this impactful program prioritizes English as a New Language (ESL) within its curriculum. Recognizing the challenges faced by newcomers, the Learning Connection focuses on equipping women with essential English communication skills and fostering their successful integration into United States society.
Beyond language acquisition, the Learning Connection provides a holistic educational environment. Foundational literacy classes are available for those seeking to build basic reading and writing skills. Furthermore, for individuals aiming to achieve academic equivalency, the program offers courses designed to prepare them for the High School Equivalency diploma. This multifaceted approach ensures that diverse learning needs are met within the community it serves.
The Learning Connection enhances its educational offerings through modern technology and valuable resources. Thanks to grants and generous donations, classrooms are equipped with computers and SmartBoards, enriching the instructional experience. Recognizing the importance of family literacy, a children’s library allows mothers to borrow books. This unique feature extends learning beyond the classroom, encouraging mothers to read with their children at home, reinforcing English language skills for both parent and child and building crucial family learning connections.
To further support the well-being and integration of its students, The Learning Connection conducts regular workshops throughout the year. These sessions cover critical topics such as women’s health, nutrition, financial literacy, immigration processes, and home and personal safety. These workshops provide practical knowledge and resources, empowering women to navigate their new lives with confidence and security.
The dedicated staff of The Learning Connection comprises experienced teachers from the Brentwood Public School District and committed volunteers, many of whom are retired educators. This blend of professional expertise and community support creates a nurturing and effective learning environment. Classes are held five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M., offering a consistent and structured schedule for participants.
Accessibility is a core principle of The Learning Connection. Classes are provided at no cost to students, funded through the New York State Adult Education budget. While a nominal donation is welcomed, it is not required, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder access to these crucial educational opportunities.
Registration for The Learning Connection takes place twice annually, in September and January. For more information about enrollment or how to support this valuable program, please use the contact details below:
