Become a Certified Lifeguard with American Red Cross Training

Lifeguarding is a critical role, ensuring the safety and well-being of pool visitors. A Red Cross Lifeguard certification is not just a job requirement; it’s a prestigious credential recognized nationwide, signifying your expertise in water safety and emergency response. We are seeking responsible individuals, aged 15 and above, to join our lifeguard team. Even if you are currently enrolled in a lifeguarding class, we encourage you to apply!

As a lifeguard, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and enjoyable aquatic environment for all patrons. This includes preventing accidents, responding effectively to emergencies, and providing excellent customer service. You will also enforce facility rules, participate in regular in-service training to keep your skills sharp, and assist with facility maintenance tasks such as cleaning and equipment setup.

Starting Wage: $13.91 per hour (Minimum age 15)

Lifeguard certification courses are readily accessible through the American Red Cross Learning Center and local YMCA’s and Recreation Centers. Prospective lifeguards will be interviewed by the Pool Manager prior to enrolling in certification. Final hiring is dependent on successful course completion.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Courses: Your Path to Certification

The American Red Cross is the gold standard for lifeguard training and certification. Our rigorous training programs combine practical, hands-on skill development with essential theoretical knowledge, assessed through both physical and written examinations. Upon successful completion, you will receive a certification valid for two years, encompassing Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, and AED – qualifications highly valued and accepted across the country.

For added convenience, blended learning options may be available at select locations, offering a mix of online and in-person training.

Lifeguard Training Prerequisites:

Before enrolling in a Red Cross Lifeguard Training course at the American Red Cross Learning Center or partner locations, candidates must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 15 years by the course completion date.
  • Successful completion of a pre-course swimming skills evaluation, which includes:
    • Continuous swim of 150 yards using either breaststroke or freestyle.
    • Timed event: Swim 20 yards, perform a surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound object from a depth of 7 to 10 feet, return to the surface and swim back 20 yards to the starting point within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
    • Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only.
    • Swim an additional 50 yards.

Note: Lifeguard certification classes are frequently offered at locations including French Creek YMCA, Westshore YMCA, Lakewood Recreation, Westlake Recreation Center, Seven Hills Recreation, Rocky River Recreation Center, and Strongsville Recreation, particularly during February, March, and April. Pool Technician/Slide Attendant – Limited Positions

Pool Technicians are vital to maintaining the cleanliness and safety of our aquatic facilities. Responsibilities include general custodial duties such as cleaning restrooms, pool equipment, pool gutters, and decks. Technicians also vacuum pools, remove trash and debris, and assist with setting up and cleaning up activity areas.

Slide Attendants (minimum age 16) ensure the safe operation of water slides. This role involves dispatching riders, verifying height restrictions, and enforcing slide rules.

Starting Wage: $12.30 per hour (Minimum Age 15 for Pool Technician)

Pool Supervisor

Pool Supervisors (age 18+) are responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the pool, ensuring smooth functioning and a positive experience for all visitors.

Starting Wage: $16.90 per hour, with higher rates based on experience.

Pool Cashier Supervisor

Pool Cashier Supervisors (age 21+) manage cashier operations, handle transactions, and provide excellent customer service at the pool entrance.

Starting Wage: $15 per hour, with higher rates based on experience.

Pool Cashier

Pool Cashiers (age 17+) are the first point of contact for visitors, responsible for ticket sales and providing information to pool guests.

Starting Wage: $12.30 per hour.
