Cultivating curiosity and inspiring a desire to learn are fundamental to education. Students who are intrinsically motivated and eager for growth are more likely to persevere through challenges and take ownership of their learning journey. While engagement is crucial, true empowerment takes it a step further, fostering an environment where students are not just participating, but actively shaping their learning experiences. Providing opportunities for questioning, exploration, and creation is key to unlocking this empowerment. Educators often grapple with integrating these elements within the constraints of a packed curriculum. However, by connecting exploration and creation to core content, we can reimagine learning structures without discarding effective traditional methods. Instead, we can blend proven strategies with innovative approaches to create richer learning experiences that truly Empower Learn Create.
This past summer, I had the exciting opportunity to delve into KOOV, SONY’s innovative coding robotics kit, alongside my son and students. I also introduced KOOV to educators at a regional STEM conference, eager to gather their perspectives. My ongoing quest is to explore tools that genuinely empower learn create, aligning with the 6Cs of Reimagining Learning, which I discuss in my book, Take the L.E.A.P.: Ignite a Culture of Innovation. Experiencing KOOV firsthand with my children, students, and fellow educators provides invaluable insights. This review shares my personal experience with KOOV, specifically for educators seeking pathways to empowered learning that embrace the 6Cs framework.

First Impressions of KOOV: A Hands-On Exploration

Upon unboxing KOOV, my initial thought was its resemblance to LEGO Mindstorms, yet with a distinct blockier, almost Minecraft-esque aesthetic. The KOOV building blocks are incredibly vibrant and visually appealing, especially for younger learners. As an educator, I was immediately impressed by the comprehensive resources KOOV offers: class management software, ready-made lesson plans, structured curriculum, and a generous supply of interlocking blocks, sensors, motors, and connectors. These elements are essential for students to create diverse robotic inventions. Diving deeper, I downloaded the KOOV app and explored its intuitive tutorials, designed to guide users through the block-based coding system. Reminiscent of Scratch, the block coding interface is user-friendly, and the blocks physically interlock, mirroring the digital coding process and allowing for tangible design construction.
Fostering Student Agency: Voice and Choice in Learning
The KOOV app excels at promoting student agency by encouraging voice and choice. Upon starting, students design personalized avatars and are presented with options to either embark on designing their own robots from scratch or select pre-designed “recipes” to build and code. My son was thrilled by the array of possibilities, from creating a sensor-activated dancing parakeet to constructing complex moving vehicles from the recipe library. The kit also incorporates an open-source Arduino platform, which acts as the crucial bridge connecting the coded instructions to the physical robot. Crucially, SONY has simplified the integration of blocks and the Arduino platform, making it accessible and student-friendly, ensuring that technical aspects empower learn create rather than hinder.

KOOV also incorporates “missions” that students can undertake, unlocking progressively complex tutorials as they advance. This gamified approach keeps users motivated and engaged. I appreciate that students can progress at their own pace, fostering individual learning while also encouraging peer support and collaboration on missions or recipe-based builds. The recipe mode is particularly insightful, providing step-by-step building instructions, parts lists, and interactive 3D model rotation within the app. This 3D capability, combined with the physical manipulation of blocks, significantly aids in the development of students’ spatial reasoning and hand-eye coordination, crucial skills that empower learn create across disciplines.
Authentic Learning Experiences: Connecting to Student Interests
Connecting learning to students’ genuine interests is paramount in making education relevant and meaningful. As an educator, witnessing students’ enthusiasm for learning and their eagerness to be in the classroom is incredibly rewarding. KOOV has the power to re-engage students who may seem disconnected and allows students who might struggle in traditional subjects like reading or math to discover their strengths through coding and design. Coding within the classroom environment fosters a sense of community as students recognize and value each other’s diverse talents, demonstrating how collaborative activities can empower learn create a more inclusive learning space.
KOOV: A Resource to Empower Learning – Key Benefits
KOOV stands out as an exceptional resource for educators aiming to empower learn create in their classrooms. Here’s why:
- Curiosity Driven Learning: The mission-based structure and recipe mode naturally pique students’ curiosity. The incremental success experienced in completing recipes motivates them to progress and see their robotic creations come to life.
- Differentiated Learning: KOOV facilitates seamless differentiation. Students can freely design and build their own unique creations, even sharing them within the KOOV community for others to replicate. Alternatively, they can follow structured recipes categorized by difficulty level, building confidence as they gradually develop their own design skills.
- Communication and Collaboration: Even quieter students find themselves communicating and collaborating with peers as they work together on projects, solve problems, and share their discoveries. KOOV naturally promotes teamwork, a key element to empower learn create in a collaborative world.
- Unleashing Creativity: KOOV provides a platform for boundless creativity. Students are encouraged to experiment, innovate, and develop unique robotic designs, fostering their creative potential.
- Building Connectedness: The KOOV community encourages sharing designs, fostering a sense of connectedness beyond the classroom. In our classroom, students further extended this connectedness by sharing their KOOV creations through platforms like Flipgrid and Seesaw, amplifying their learning and showcasing their achievements.
- Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Throughout the design, creation, and building process, students are constantly engaged in critical thinking and problem-solving. They troubleshoot challenges, refine their designs, and learn to think analytically, skills that fundamentally empower learn create future-ready individuals.
- Visualizing Abstract Concepts: KOOV aids in clarifying abstract concepts, particularly in computer science and mathematics. Students visually and tangibly learn about complex ideas through hands-on interaction, making learning more accessible and impactful.
Integrating Coding Across the Curriculum

While we recognize the importance of nurturing these essential skills, time constraints often pose a challenge for educators. While KOOV is an excellent option for after-school STEM clubs, I strongly advocate for integrating coding directly into the existing curriculum. Regardless of the subject matter or student demographics, KOOV can deepen learning and create memorable, impactful experiences that enhance content retention. After all, content retention is a primary goal in education. Instead of placing blame on students when retention is low, we should explore innovative tools like KOOV that leverage the abundant opportunities available today.
In our classroom, we frequently connected KOOV projects to writing and digital storytelling using tools like the Book Creator App. However, the interdisciplinary applications are vast. KOOV can be seamlessly integrated into mathematics lessons, procedural writing activities, geography and mapping projects in social studies, and of course, STEM-focused units. The versatility of KOOV allows educators to empower learn create connections across various subject areas.
While we have utilized numerous robotics platforms in our classroom, KOOV consistently ranks among my top recommendations. This is largely due to SONY’s comprehensive approach in making the product accessible and aligning it with the 6Cs of reimagining learning. KOOV effectively fosters crucial mindsets and future-ready skills in students. As educators, it is our responsibility to immerse students in experiences that enhance their learning, cultivate their creative capacity, and ultimately lead to innovative thinking, helping them to empower learn create their own futures.
