Kennesaw State University utilizes D2L as its Learning Management System (LMS) to enhance online learning experiences. Access to D2L courses is typically automated when you are assigned to a course through Owl Express. Once enrolled, your D2L account will be created automatically. Please allow up to 48 hours after your course assignment or registration for your D2L account to become active and accessible.
For situations where course assignments are not made through Owl Express, or if you require manual account creation, KSU provides a dedicated D2L Manual User Account Creation form. It’s important to note specific requirements depending on your account type:
Understanding D2L Account Requirements
Student Accounts
For student accounts, particularly those without a “@students.kennesaw.edu” email address, it’s necessary to request an email override. This is common for student visitors who may not have a standard student email. To initiate this, please contact [email protected] to request the email override before submitting the D2L account request form.
Faculty and Staff Accounts
Faculty and staff account creation for the D2L learning management system has specific prerequisites. Before a D2L account can be established, faculty and staff members must have a Buckley form on file with the Office of the Registrar, accompanied by a current FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) certificate.
FERPA training is conducted annually in October and also within 30 days of hiring for new employees. A current certificate is valid from your most recent FERPA training assignment. Verification of FERPA certification is required through the Office of the Registrar, a process that may take a couple of business days. Your patience during this verification is appreciated. Please note that direct form submissions from faculty/staff are not accepted for this process.
If you need to fulfill these requirements, please follow these steps to begin:
-
Complete FERPA Training via OwlTrain: Access FERPA training through OwlTrain. Log in to the OwlTrain system using your KSU email address and Duo Authentication. Find the FERPA training assignment under the “Compliance” section (accessible via the squares to the left of your name) or in “My Assignments” on the homepage. Download a PDF of your FERPA certificate, as it will be required for upload to the Buckley form. For guidance on locating your certificate, refer to KSU Knowledge Base and search for “OwlTrain certificate,” or use this direct link for instructions: KB on printing compliance certificate.
Important: If you do not see FERPA training listed, check if you already possess a certificate dated October of the current year or newer. If so, your training is current, and this certificate can be used for your Buckley form. If you lack a certificate or if it’s dated before October, email [email protected] to request FERPA training be added to your account. If your employment start date is in the future, your supervisor can request the training on your behalf.
-
Complete the Buckley Form: The Buckley form is available on the Security Forms page. When completing the form:
- Ensure all mandatory fields are filled out and click the “FINISH” button to submit.
- Inform your supervisor to expect the form for their signature, as the links are time-sensitive and require prompt attention.
By following these guidelines, you can efficiently gain access to the D2L learning management system at Kennesaw State University, whether through automatic course assignment or the manual account creation process.
