Getting your learner’s permit just got easier! You can now complete your application and take the Learner Permit Test online from the comfort of your home using a PC or tablet, before visiting the DMV to finalize your application.
What to Expect: Test Timeline
Plan for approximately 30 to 40 minutes to complete the online learner permit test. Make sure you have allocated enough time to avoid interruptions.
Requirements for Test Takers Under 18
If you are under 18 years of age, please note that a parent or legal guardian must:
- Grant permission to the DMV to capture photos during your online test session for identity verification.
- Actively supervise you throughout the duration of the test to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Accompany you to a DMV office to finalize your application process and sign the official Online Permit Test Parent/Guardian Certification (Form MV-263) in the presence of a DMV representative.
Webcam and Technical Requirements
A functioning webcam is mandatory for the online learner permit test. You will need to enable webcam access to proceed. Without a webcam or enabled access, you will be unable to start the test online and will need to take the test in person at a DMV office.
Throughout the test, multiple images will be captured via your webcam for security and identity verification purposes. Ensure you are in a well-lit environment where you are clearly visible and alone in the frame. If the DMV cannot clearly identify you in the images, or if multiple individuals are detected, you may be required to retake the test in person at a DMV office.
Required Identification Documents
As part of the online application process, you will need to upload scanned or photo images of your identification documents. Remember to bring the original documents with you when you visit your local DMV office to have your photo taken and pay the permit fee. Refer to the guides below to prepare your necessary documents:
