From Retail to Toys
Sharon DiMinico initially owned a retail tile business but envisioned a new venture centered around the emotions and fun she experienced while shopping for her baby. In 1987, her vision started to materialize when she presented a business plan for Learning Express as a fundraiser for Groton Community School, where she was president of the board. Acton, MA, became the location of the very first Learning Express.
Expansion and Franchising
Just six months later, Sharon opened her own Learning Express store in Needham, MA. During this time, an article about franchising in Inc. Magazine caught her eye. Recognizing the rewards of business ownership, she saw franchising as a way to expand Learning Express and offer others the same entrepreneurial satisfaction. In 1990, the first Learning Express franchise was sold in Andover, MA, marking the beginning of its franchise journey.
National Growth and Recognition
Learning Express held its first company convention in 1998 and moved to a larger office in Devens, MA in the same year. The company’s success was recognized nationally when Entrepreneur Magazine named Learning Express as one of the Top 500 Franchises in 1999. This award, received multiple times since, highlighted the strength and potential of the Learning Express franchise model. Today, Learning Express Toys & Gifts thrives as the leading specialty toy franchise in the US.
