A Specialized Environment for Diverse Learners
Carl Sandburg Learning Center specializes in providing special education instruction to elementary school students with multiple disabilities. We are proud to serve approximately 85 students from kindergarten through 5th grade. Our commitment to individualized attention is reflected in our small classroom settings, typically comprising just 5 to 10 students, supported by a dedicated teacher and para-educator team. This low student-to-staff ratio allows for focused, personalized learning experiences tailored to meet the unique needs of each child.
Curriculum and Comprehensive Support Services
The foundation of our academic program is the Montgomery County Public Schools curriculum, expertly adapted by our skilled educators to address the specific instructional needs of our students. Technology plays a vital role in our classrooms, with computers available for instructional activities and research. Internet access in every classroom, coupled with educational technologies like Promethean boards, enhances the learning experience. Beyond core academics, we offer a comprehensive suite of related services, seamlessly integrated into the curriculum. These include art, music, physical education, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Furthermore, augmentative communication devices are readily available to support student communication needs.

Carl Sandburg Learning Center offers a range of program components designed to support the holistic development of our students. These include the MCPS Curriculum for students with developmental disabilities, a full-day kindergarten program, and both regular and adaptive physical education. Our related services, encompassing occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech & language therapy, are thoughtfully integrated into classroom instruction. We also have a full-time psychologist on staff, a dedicated health room, and a media center to further support our students. Our special features, such as computers and Promethean Boards in every classroom and media center, underscore our commitment to utilizing technology to enhance learning. We place a strong emphasis on curriculum development, employing trans-disciplinary and multi-sensory approaches to learning, and focusing intently on social and emotional teaching to ensure every student thrives.
