The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course utilizes a blended learning format, strategically combining the flexibility of online modules with the practical experience of in-person training. The online component requires approximately 6-8 hours of study, allowing you to learn at your own pace. This is followed by approximately 27 hours of in-person training and rigorous testing sessions where you will apply your knowledge and refine your practical skills under expert guidance. Completion of all online coursework is mandatory before attending the final in-person session, ensuring all participants are equally prepared for the hands-on training.

Prior to enrolling in the American Red Cross Learning Center, all candidates must successfully complete a pre-course skills assessment. This assessment is typically conducted at the first meeting unless pre-arrangements have been made. For individuals unsure about their ability to meet the prerequisite skills, it is strongly recommended to schedule an assessment before registration. Contact the Aquatic Director, Beth Raub, via email at [email protected] to arrange a preliminary skills evaluation. Please note that refunds are not provided after enrollment in the Red Cross Learning Center, highlighting the importance of pre-assessment and commitment.

The pre-course assessment includes two key prerequisites designed to evaluate essential swimming capabilities:

Prerequisite 1: Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence

This prerequisite tests your endurance and versatility in the water:

  1. Begin by jumping into deep water, fully submerging, and immediately resurfacing.
  2. Swim 150 meters continuously using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Back or side strokes are not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed for this portion.
  3. Maintain a stationary position by treading water for 2 minutes using only your legs.
  4. Conclude with a 50-yard swim using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination.

Prerequisite 2: Timed Event Challenge

This timed event assesses your rescue and object retrieval skills under pressure:

a. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water as preferred. Swim goggles are not allowed for this timed event.
b. Perform a surface dive, either feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
c. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to the starting point, holding the 10-pound object with both hands while keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming underwater during this segment is not allowed.
d. Exit the water unaided, without using a ladder or steps. This entire sequence must be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

To successfully complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and earn certification through American Red Cross Learning, candidates must meet several crucial requirements. These include mandatory attendance at all scheduled course meetings, achieving a minimum score of 80% on all multiple-choice exams to demonstrate theoretical understanding, and successfully completing all required in-water skill evaluations to prove practical competency.

This course is specifically tailored for aspiring professional rescuers. Therefore, a high standard of professionalism is expected from all participants throughout the duration of the American Red Cross learning experience. By choosing American Red Cross Learning for your lifeguard certification, you are investing in a highly respected and globally recognized program that equips you with the skills and confidence to save lives and respond effectively in aquatic emergencies.
