Importing eDynamic Learning Courses into Canvas: A Step-by-Step Guide

Integrating engaging and dynamic content into your Learning Management System (LMS) is crucial for effective online education. If you’re using Canvas and want to leverage the rich curriculum from Edynamic Learning, importing your course packages is a straightforward process. This guide will walk you through each step, ensuring a smooth integration of eDynamic Learning materials into your Canvas courses.

Before You Begin: Accessing Your Course Package

To start, you’ll need to download your eDynamic Learning Canvas course package. This package is available from your Client Account on the eDynamic Learning website. If you’re new to the client account, refer to the eDynamic Learning Client Account Quick Guide for detailed instructions on how to navigate and download your resources.

Importing Your eDynamic Learning Course Content into Canvas

Once you have your course package downloaded, follow these steps to import it into Canvas:

  1. Navigate to Admin in Canvas: On the Canvas dashboard, locate the Admin option in the left navigation menu. Click on it, and then select your account.

  2. Create a New Course: In the upper right corner of your account admin page, click on the +Course button to initiate the creation of a new course shell.

  3. Configure Course Details: Fill in the necessary fields for your new course:

    • Course Name: Enter a descriptive title for your course. This is how students will identify the course.
    • Reference Code: Input a short name or course code. This code is often displayed in the Course Navigation Menu and on student dashboards.
    • Subaccount: If your institution uses subaccounts, select the appropriate subaccount for this course. Otherwise, the course will be placed in the main account.
    • Enrollment Term: If your Canvas instance uses terms, specify the relevant enrollment term for this course.

After filling in the details, click Add Course to create the empty course shell.

  4. Access Your New Course: Click on the newly created course to enter its course environment.

  5. Initiate Content Import: In the upper-right hand menu of your new course, click on Import Existing Content. This will start the process of bringing your eDynamic Learning course package into Canvas.

  6. Select Content Type and Package: On the ‘Import Content’ page:

    • Choose Content Type as “Canvas Course Export Package”.
    • Click Choose File to browse your computer and select the eDynamic Learning course package file you downloaded earlier.
  7. Choose Content to Import: Select All Content to ensure that you import the complete eDynamic Learning course materials.

  8. Begin Import Process: Click the Import button to start uploading and importing the eDynamic Learning course package into your Canvas course.

  9. Monitor Import Status: Canvas will display an import status as Running. Wait until the status changes to Completed. It’s common to see notifications about issues during this process. These are typically related to LTI links not being fully resolved during the import, which is expected.

  10. Navigate to Course Home: Once the import is completed, click Home in the top left-hand corner menu.

  11. Verify Imported Content: Review your course homepage and modules to confirm that the eDynamic Learning course content has been successfully imported.

  12. LTI Credential Setup (If Necessary): If you have already configured your LTI credentials, the eDynamic Learning course content should be functional immediately. If not, or if you encounter issues with content loading, you will need to set up your LTI credentials. Refer to the Canvas – LTI Configuration guide for detailed instructions on LTI setup. This step is essential to fully enable interactive eDynamic Learning content within Canvas.
