Music notes, like the alphabet, can seem daunting at first. But just as you learned to read, you can learn to play piano. This guide will introduce you to the basics of music notes and piano keys, using the familiar “Do-Re-Mi” scale from “The Sound of Music.”
Understanding Music Notes and the Grand Staff
Music notes are represented by the letters A through G. The “Do-Re-Mi” scale corresponds to these notes, helping you understand pitch. Remember the song: Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do. Each syllable represents a note on the musical scale.
The image above shows the grand staff, consisting of two sets of five lines. The higher notes are written on the Treble Clef (top staff), while the lower notes are on the Bass Clef (bottom staff). The note in the center of the grand staff is Middle C.
Finding Middle C on Your Piano
Locate the middle of your piano keyboard. Middle C is usually the C nearest to the manufacturer’s logo. It’s often helpful to look for a grouping of two black keys, with Middle C being the white key immediately to the left of them.
Playing the “Do-Re-Mi” Scale
Once you’ve found Middle C (Do), you can play the entire “Do-Re-Mi” scale. The notes of the scale ascend sequentially to the right of Middle C on the keyboard.
As shown above, each subsequent note of “Do-Re-Mi” is the next white key to the right of the previous one. Practice playing this scale to familiarize yourself with the piano keys and corresponding notes. The treble clef notes (higher notes) typically correspond with the keys to the right of Middle C and are often played with the right hand. Conversely, bass clef notes (lower notes) are to the left and played with the left hand.
Right Hand, Left Hand
Remember, the notes on the Treble Clef (the top set of lines in the image) are generally played with your right hand. The notes on the Bass Clef (the bottom set of lines) are generally played with your left hand.
