How Long Will It Take to Learn Ukulele? A Six-Month Journey

After six months of learning the ukulele, having a prior background in guitar, I’m finally starting to feel comfortable. My practice now includes B major/G# minor, allowing me to play basic chords in keys ranging from 4 flats to 5 sharps at a reasonable tempo. These basic chords include, for example in C/Am: C, Dm, Dm7, Em, E, E7, F, G, G7, and Am.

While I’m proficient with these basics, I still occasionally consult chord charts for less common chords like sus, 6th, major 7th, diminished/augmented 5th, and 9th chords, particularly in unfamiliar keys. However, the core chords are now solidly within my grasp. Two keys remain where I need further practice to solidify my knowledge.

Effective ukulele strumming, in my view, relies on playing the lowest available notes in each chord, keeping fingers close to the nut, and generally avoiding higher barre chords often used in guitar playing. Maintaining chords at a similar fret level contributes to a balanced sound. Mastering even these basic chords requires significant practice and memorization.

Beyond theoretical knowledge, physical practice is essential. Developing the muscle memory and dexterity for smooth chord transitions is an ongoing process. However, my progress is encouraging. I rarely play my guitar now, as my ukulele chord knowledge has surpassed it, achieving one of my initial learning goals.
