“I Never Lose, I Win or I Learn”: Embracing Growth from Every Experience

Nelson Mandela’s powerful quote, “I never lose, I win or I learn,” resonates deeply when reflecting on any journey, especially one as demanding and insightful as a political campaign. While the recent campaign might not have culminated in the desired electoral victory, viewing it through this lens reveals a wealth of positive outcomes and invaluable lessons. This experience underscores the truth that every endeavor, regardless of the immediate result, offers opportunities for growth and a unique form of success.

The Wins Along the Way: Discovering Strengths and Community

Often, the true victories are found not just in the final outcome, but in the journey itself. A campaign, with its inherent challenges and triumphs, has a remarkable way of illuminating the landscape of genuine support and revealing the strength of community bonds.

Real Friends and Endorsements: The Power of True Support

One of the most profound discoveries during the campaign was identifying the individuals who stood as true allies and supporters. The endorsements received were not just names on a list, but affirmations of belief and shared vision. The support from figures like David Cohen, a respected voice, and Patrick Ahrens, a promising future Assemblyperson, was deeply meaningful. Moreover, the backing of organizations like the NorCal Carpenters Union and LiUNA local 270, representing the hardworking laborers, was an immense honor. These endorsements, along with those from community leaders like Chappie Jones and Carlos Rosario, highlighted a network of individuals who believed in the campaign’s mission.

The presence of these dedicated individuals, who invested their time and energy, feels like a victory in itself. This image serves as a constant reminder of the unwavering support system that was built and cherished throughout the campaign.

Community Encuentros: Meaningful Connections and Renewed Hope

Beyond endorsements and organized support, the campaign provided an invaluable opportunity to connect with neighbors on a personal level. Inspired by Pope Francis’ concept of “encuentro,” which signifies a deep and open encounter with another person, the campaign trail became a path to meaningful dialogues and genuine understanding. These encounters, or “encuentros,” went beyond superficial interactions, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diverse perspectives and concerns within the community.

Conversations with individuals like Susan from the TAPNA neighborhood, Leonard on Davis Street, Jean returning from a disaster-stricken area, John in Santa Clara facing health challenges, and Katherine and Bear downtown with their insightful questions about water policy, were profoundly impactful. These dialogues, representing just a fraction of the encounters experienced, offered a renewed sense of hope for the future. They revealed the presence of thoughtful, engaged citizens deeply invested in their community, reinforcing the belief that collective well-being is a shared priority.

The Crucible of Learning: Strategic Insights and Personal Growth

The campaign trail was not just a path of connection, but also a rigorous learning environment. Every challenge and unexpected turn presented an opportunity to gain valuable insights and refine strategies for future endeavors.

Strategic Campaign Insights: Endorsements, Engagement, and Databases

One key strategic takeaway was the undeniable importance of endorsements. Data analysis revealed a significant surge in website traffic to the endorsement page as the election approached, indicating that voters actively consider endorsements when making their decisions. This highlights the need to prioritize and effectively leverage endorsements in future campaigns.

Furthermore, the campaign reinforced the paramount value of direct, in-person interaction with voters. These one-on-one conversations proved to be the most rewarding and impactful aspect of voter engagement. However, the non-scalable nature of individual interactions underscored the necessity of building a strong support network to amplify the campaign message. The realization that a robust database of contacts is crucial became evident. Relying solely on the voter file proved to be a limitation, emphasizing the need to cultivate and maintain independent contact lists for effective outreach.

The Human Element and Voter Connection: Addressing Concerns and Building Trust

Engaging directly with voters also provided invaluable insights into their concerns and priorities. Addressing issues like the basement flooding in the TAPNA neighborhood or assisting a voter in resolving a water leak demonstrated a commitment to responsive governance and problem-solving. This approach, inspired by former city councilman Forrest Williams, highlighted the importance of addressing tangible community needs.

Water emerged as a significant concern among voters, with a widespread desire for lower rates and a more efficient water district. This feedback underscores the need for future campaigns and elected officials to prioritize water-related issues and demonstrate a commitment to addressing these concerns effectively.

Personal Growth and Self-Discovery: Resilience, Adaptability, and Perspective

Beyond strategic lessons, the campaign journey fostered significant personal growth. The ability to precinct walk in extreme heat, equipped with the right preparation and mindset, became a testament to personal resilience and adaptability. It challenged perceived limitations and reinforced the idea that perseverance can overcome obstacles.

The experience also offered a valuable perspective on the limitations of digital marketing. Despite implementing a comprehensive multi-channel digital strategy targeting various voter segments, it proved insufficient on its own. This highlighted the need for a balanced approach that integrates digital strategies with traditional outreach methods.

Learning to delegate tasks to staff and volunteers, and trusting them to execute them in their own way, was another crucial lesson in leadership and team management. It emphasized the importance of relinquishing control and empowering others to contribute their unique skills and perspectives. Finally, the campaign journey brought a profound self-awareness. The realization that personal characteristics, such as age and background, can influence voter perceptions, regardless of qualifications or ideas, was a humbling but valuable lesson. It underscored the importance of detaching from personal outcomes and focusing on the broader mission and future engagements.

Gratitude as a Foundation for Growth: Acknowledging the Team and Support System

Gratitude emerged as a central theme throughout this journey, recognizing the indispensable contributions of individuals who played a vital role in the campaign. Frances Herbert, the campaign consultant, deserves immense appreciation for her guidance, data-driven approach, and steady hand in navigating the complexities of the campaign. The dedicated staff and volunteers, including James Deng, Joseph Fierro, Steve Samuel, Claudia Martinez, GOAT Jenny Coupe, and Dylan Lehmann, poured their energy and skills into the campaign, and their contributions are deeply valued. The Spanish translation support provided by Monsé Rodriguez and Leslie Murillo, and the advice and counsel from Jon Pedigo and Darren Seaton, were also instrumental.

Special recognition is due to Anthony Shing, the campaign coordinator/manager/sidekick, whose boundless energy and unwavering support were a constant source of motivation and strength. The unwavering support from family, including cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends, provided a bedrock of encouragement from the outset. The understanding and balance provided by daughters helped maintain perspective throughout the demanding process. Finally, deepest gratitude goes to Dara, whose sacrifices, tolerance, and unwavering partnership were essential to navigating the challenges and celebrating the achievements of the campaign.

La Lucha Sigue: The Journey Continues

Running for office was a long-held aspiration, and the opportunity to embark on this journey was a privilege in itself. While the immediate electoral outcome may not have been the desired “win” in the conventional sense, the experience is undeniably a victory in learning, growth, and community building. Embracing the philosophy of “I never lose, I win or I learn” transforms perceived setbacks into valuable stepping stones. The campaign may have concluded, but the spirit of engagement, the commitment to community, and the pursuit of positive change endure. As the saying goes, “La Lucha Sigue!” – the struggle continues, informed and strengthened by the lessons learned and the connections forged along the way.
