Meet Caleb: From Harvard to Product Management at IXL Learning 👋
Hi, I’m Caleb! My journey started in Seattle, and I pursued my undergraduate degree at Harvard, majoring in Statistics and minoring in Computer Science. My initial encounter with IXL Learning was as a software engineering intern after graduation. I had plans for graduate school, but after some time in the program, I realized it wasn’t the right path for me. That’s when I re-interviewed at IXL and transitioned into the role of an Associate Product Manager (APM). Product management had always been an area I wanted to explore, but opportunities were scarce, or I simply didn’t hear back from companies. IXL presented a fantastic chance for me to dive into this field.
About IXL Learning: IXL Learning is dedicated to transforming education through technology. While we have a long-standing presence in the EdTech sector, we are currently experiencing rapid growth. I’m part of the Teacher and Classroom Experience team, which is incredibly exciting because we are constantly developing and integrating new features to enhance the educational experience. The APM team at IXL is composed of highly intelligent, enthusiastic, and supportive individuals, making it a great environment to work in and launch your Ixl Learning Careers.
Understanding the Rotational APM Program at IXL Learning
Could you elaborate on the structure and operation of the IXL Learning APM program for those unfamiliar?
The APM program at IXL Learning is evolving towards a rotational structure. Initially, APMs were placed on teams more consistently, but recognizing the value of diverse experiences, the program is shifting to offer rotations. Incoming APM cohorts will now benefit from a broader range of experiences, rotating to different teams and projects roughly every 6 to 9 months. This rotational aspect is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of various facets of product management within IXL Learning careers.
Typically, as an APM, you will work closely with a senior Product Manager, embedded within a specific product team. These teams generally consist of five to eight engineers, quality assurance specialists, and a dedicated design team. One of the unique aspects of being an APM at IXL is the level of responsibility entrusted to you. Task-wise, you engage in many of the same activities as a fully-fledged Product Manager. This includes contributing to product strategy, market analysis, and feature development, all while receiving mentorship and guidance from senior team members.
The learning curve is steep, and the level of work and responsibility escalates quickly. This rapid immersion allows APMs to feel like they are making significant contributions to IXL Learning early in their careers, truly impacting the direction of educational technology and their own ixl learning careers.
Daily Responsibilities and Impact as an IXL Learning APM
Is there anything about the IXL Learning APM program that the official landing page might not fully convey regarding daily tasks?
While the program landing page provides a solid overview, it’s important to understand the breadth of daily tasks. Not all activities are strictly confined to traditional product management. A significant portion of your day involves close collaboration with the engineering manager and lead engineers. This includes working on sprint planning, feature prioritization, and ensuring seamless execution of product development cycles. This collaborative environment is crucial for anyone building ixl learning careers.
The website mentions gathering requirements and clarifying project goals, which might seem like a minor point, but it’s actually a core element of the IXL Product Team’s work. We spend considerable time engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, including teachers, students, administrators, and customers. Our goal is to deeply understand their needs, challenges, and aspirations to develop product solutions that truly meet market demands and enhance educational outcomes. This user-centric approach is fundamental to ixl learning careers at IXL.
Furthermore, many APMs at IXL Learning come from a strong technical background, often with STEM degrees or experience in software development. This technical foundation is highly beneficial in this role. It facilitates effective communication and collaboration with the engineering teams and a deeper understanding of the technical aspects of product development, which is a valuable asset for ixl learning careers.
