Learn to Play Hockey Levels and Schedules
We offer various levels within our Learn to Play Hockey program to suit different age groups and skill levels. Here’s a breakdown of what’s available:
Youth Hockey Skating 1 & 2
Designed for children who have completed introductory skating programs like Snowplow Sam 3 or Basic 2 of a Learn to Skate program, these levels introduce hockey-specific skating skills. Participants will learn to maneuver faster and become more agile on the ice, focusing on techniques essential for hockey.
Lesson Schedule:
- Series 4: March 3 – May 3 (Please note: No classes on 03/24 – 03/29)
- Series 5: June 2 – June 25
- Series 6: July 7 – July 30
Classes are 30-minute sessions, once a week.
- Mondays or Wednesdays: 5:00 PM
- Saturdays: 9:00 AM
Cost & Registration (Series 4 Example): $192/eight-class series. Registration requires two steps – first with Learn to Skate USA and then with our program.
Jr. Pioneers Hockey Pre-Team
This program serves as a bridge between Learn to Play Hockey and competitive youth hockey teams. It introduces team play and incorporates beginner-level stickhandling, shooting, and passing skills alongside continued skating development. It is recommended to complete Hockey Skating 2 before joining Pre-Team.
Gear Requirements: Full hockey gear is mandatory, including helmet with cage, gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, shoulder pads, hockey pants, stick, and neck guard. Hockey skates can be borrowed from our facilities if needed.
Lesson Schedule:
- Series 4: March 3 – May 3 (Please note: No classes on 03/24 – 03/29)
- Series 5: June 2 – June 25
- Series 6: July 7 – July 30
Sessions are three times a week.
- Mondays & Wednesdays: 6:30 PM (30-minute session)
- Saturdays: 7:45 AM
Cost & Registration (Series 4 Example): $380/eight-class series. Similar to Youth Hockey, registration involves steps with both Learn to Skate USA and our program.
Adult Learn to Play Hockey 101 & 201
It’s never too late to learn hockey! Our adult program is tailored for beginners and progresses through three levels, focusing on power skating, stick handling, passing, and shooting. Whether you aim for recreational games or competitive leagues, this program provides the skills you need.
Gear Requirements: Full hockey gear is mandatory for adult programs, including helmet, gloves, shin guards, elbow pads, neck guards, and a stick.

- Series 4: March 3 – May 3 (Please note: No classes on 03/24 – 03/29)
- Series 5: June 2 – June 25
- Series 6: July 7 – July 30
Classes are 60-minute sessions, once a week.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear for my first lesson?
We recommend wearing comfortable, warm layers that allow for movement. Long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, mittens or gloves, and a helmet (hockey or bike) are ideal. A hat and coat are also advisable, especially for colder rink temperatures.
Is skate rental available?
Yes, skate rental is included in your Learn to Skate/Play Hockey registration. However, you are welcome to bring your own hockey skates if you have them.
What about parking?
Ample parking is available around the Ritchie Center. After registering, you can request a parking permit at DU Parking website or by calling 303-871-3210. Temporary permits are also available for your first session; contact our coordinator at 303-871-3820.
