Getting your learner permit just got easier! You can start your application and even take your written test from the comfort of your home using a computer or tablet. After completing the online portion, you’ll just need to visit the DMV to finalize your application. Before you begin your online learner permit test, it’s important to make sure you have everything ready for a smooth process.
Test Duration
Plan for approximately 30 to 40 minutes to complete the online permit test.
Requirements for Applicants Under 18
If you are under the age of 18, please note that a parent or legal guardian must provide DMV permission for photographs to be taken during your online test session. They will also need to supervise you while you are taking the test. Furthermore, your parent or guardian must accompany you to a DMV office to complete the application process and sign the Online Permit Test Parent/Guardian Certification (PDF) (Form MV-263) in the presence of a DMV representative.
Webcam Access is Essential
A working webcam is mandatory to take the Learner Permit Test Online. You will be required to enable webcam access to proceed. If a webcam is not connected or access is not enabled, you will not be able to start the online test.
Throughout the test, multiple images will be captured via your webcam. Please ensure you are in a well-lit area where your face is clearly visible. If the DMV system cannot properly identify you in the images, or if multiple individuals are visible in the frame, you might be required to retake the test in person at a DMV office.
Prepare Your Proof of Identity Documents
You will need to upload scanned or photographed images of your identification documents during the online application. Remember to bring the original documents with you when you visit your local DMV office to have your photo taken and pay the permit fees. Refer to these guides to understand which documents are required:
