Learning About Numbers? Sesame Street’s Classic Video is a Great Start

Sesame Street has been a cornerstone of early childhood education, especially for learning about numbers. A standout 1986 video uses a fun talk show format, hosted by Big Bird, to explore numbers 1-10 and 20. It’s a classic approach to number learning.

This Sesame Street video shines due to its incorporation of classic number segments from the show’s early years. Imagine Big Bird as a talk show host, with The Count as his announcer – a delightful setup for children. The video cleverly integrates segments for each number from one to ten, and includes a few for the number twenty, often featuring numbers in multiple engaging scenarios. Viewers will recognize and enjoy iconic sketches like “The King of 8,” “Martian Beauty,” “Dollhouse,” and “I Just Adore Four.” Animated segments, such as “Two Toucans Two-Step” and “Four Lions at My Door,” along with segments featuring John-John, add variety and appeal.

However, while the segments are largely excellent, a notable portion are animated or feature non-Muppet characters. Muppet enthusiasts might find themselves wishing for more appearances from beloved characters beyond Big Bird, The Count, Ernie, Grover, and a few others. Including more Muppet-centric segments, like those featuring Harvey Kneeslappers or Kermit counting Twiddlebugs, could have further enriched the video. Similarly, iconic animated segments from “Pinball Number Count” or “Baker” series would have been welcome additions.

Despite a slight lack of Muppet focus for some viewers, this Sesame Street learning about numbers video remains a valuable resource for early childhood education. It’s particularly enjoyable for fans of The Count, classic Sesame Street animation, and segments from the 1970s era. Its nostalgic charm and educational content make it a worthwhile watch for young learners starting to explore the world of numbers.
