Troubleshooting LinkedIn Learning “Learning Icon” Issues in ICON: A Step-by-Step Guide

Currently, there’s a known issue where embedding a single LinkedIn Learning video into an ICON course can cause unexpected playback behavior. Instead of stopping after the selected video, the system may continue playing subsequent videos from the LinkedIn Learning course. This can be confusing for students and disrupt the intended learning experience within your ICON course.

Fortunately, a workaround exists to ensure only the intended video plays – utilizing LinkedIn Learning Paths. By creating a brief learning path that includes a piece of custom content followed by your chosen LinkedIn Learning video, you can effectively resolve this “Learning Icon” bug and maintain control over the video content displayed in your ICON course. This guide will walk you through the process of creating and embedding a learning path to address this issue.

To create learning paths, you’ll need the Curator role or higher within LinkedIn Learning. If you require Curator access, please reach out to [email protected].

Here’s how to implement the learning path workaround:

Step-by-Step Guide to Create a Learning Path

  1. Access LinkedIn Learning Admin: Begin by logging into LinkedIn Learning. Once logged in, navigate to the “Admin” section located at the top right of the page.

  2. Initiate Learning Path Creation: In the Admin area, find the “Add” dropdown menu at the top right. Click on “Create learning path” to start building your workaround.

  3. Create New Learning Path: Click on the “Create new” button to begin setting up your learning path.

  4. Define Learning Path Details: Fill in the necessary fields for your learning path, such as title and description, as you see fit. Once completed, click “Create”.

  5. Configure Section 1: Complete the fields for “Section 1” of your learning path. Then, click “Add content > Search for content” to proceed.

  6. Search for Custom Content: In the content search interface, filter your results. On the left-hand menu, select “Content by University of Iowa” and then choose “Documents” as the content type. Here, you can easily add the pre-uploaded Iowa logo document as your custom content piece. Click “Add” to include it in your section, and then click “Done”.

  7. Filter for Iowa Documents: Refine your search further by selecting “University of Iowa content” and “Documents” to locate the Iowa logo, or your preferred custom document.

  8. Add Section 2 with Your Video: Click “Add section” at the bottom to create a second section. Fill in the “Section 2” fields as needed, and again click “Add content > Search for content”. This time, search for the specific LinkedIn Learning video you wish to embed. Click “Add” to include your video, and then click “Done”.

  9. Save and Publish: With both sections configured (custom content and your video), click “Save & Publish” at the top right to finalize your learning path in LinkedIn Learning.

Embedding Your Learning Path in ICON

  1. Navigate to your ICON Course: Log in to ICON and go to the specific module within your course where you intend to add the LinkedIn Learning video. Click the “+” sign within the module to add new content.

  2. Create a Content Item: Choose to create a new “Page”, “Assignment”, “Discussion”, or “Quiz” within the module.

  3. Edit the Content Item: Once created, click on the name of the newly added item and select “Edit”.

  4. Embed LinkedIn Learning Path: In the editing interface, click on “Tools”, then “Apps”, and finally select “LinkedIn Learning”. Search for the learning path you just created. Click “Add”, followed by “Confirm” to embed it.

  5. Save Your Changes: Click “Save” on the page, assignment, discussion, or quiz to finalize the embedding of your LinkedIn Learning path.

By following these steps, you can effectively use learning paths to circumvent the “learning icon” bug and ensure seamless integration of single LinkedIn Learning videos into your ICON courses.
