Discover the Power of Next Level Learning at Omaha Public Schools

Summer break at Omaha Public Schools is not just downtime; it’s a launchpad for Next Level Learning, an enriching program designed to keep students engaged and advancing. Beyond the essential subjects, participants in this initiative dive into exciting experiences, from piloting drones to performing on stage in musicals.

“We are definitely prioritizing reading and math,” emphasizes Elijah Simmons, principal of Fontenelle Elementary’s Next Level Learning program. “However, what truly distinguishes Next Level Learning is our commitment to project-based learning, enriching afternoon activities, and impactful student experiences.”

This year, Next Level Learning is set to empower over 13,500 students throughout June and July, operating across 34 sites within the district.

Susanne Cramer, Executive Director of Academic Recovery at Omaha Public Schools, highlights the scale of the program: “For a couple of months each year, it’s akin to managing a compact school district.”

Cramer was instrumental in orchestrating this year’s Next Level Learning, with the district proactively allocating Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds. This strategic investment ensures program enhancements are tailored to diverse student needs and underpinned by a high-caliber curriculum.

“Our focus is on crafting educational experiences that are intensely captivating and fully immersive for our students,” Cramer explains.

Next Level Learning sessions are designed to offer a camp-like atmosphere, revolving around engaging themes such as science, nature, sports, and art. The program’s dual purpose is to facilitate academic recovery and boost student achievement, while also fostering enrichment and a sense of joy in learning.

Lillian Nero, a Next Level Learning student intern and recent graduate of North High, shares her enthusiasm: “Students are incredibly inquisitive and curious. Their eyes light up with eagerness to learn everything.”

Nero is part of Omaha Public Schools’ paid student internship program, a forward-thinking initiative aimed at cultivating a pipeline of future educators.

“Many teachers have profoundly shaped my life in ways I can hardly express,” Nero reflects. She values the opportunity to provide individualized support to students and witness the unique impact of education on each of them.

“There’s a growing need for more teachers and individuals ready to assist, and I’m eager to contribute,” she states.

Student interns like Nero play a vital role in literacy support. They receive specialized training in reading intervention techniques and provide tutoring to elementary students.

Omaha Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Logan underscores the importance of summer engagement: “We advocate for all children to participate in enriching activities throughout the summer. Summer learning loss is a significant concern, particularly pronounced for students who faced academic challenges during the regular school year.”

The organizers of Next Level Learning are encouraged by the strong interest from families and are committed to further enhancing the program in the years to come.
