University of Florida E-Learning Updates: What UFApps Users Need to Know

Welcome to the latest updates concerning UFApps, the University of Florida’s essential e-learning resource. As part of our commitment to providing a cutting-edge and efficient e-learning environment, UFIT is implementing key changes to the UFApps service that will impact students and instructors. Here’s what you need to know about upcoming software updates and platform enhancements designed to improve your University of Florida e-learning experience.

Important Changes to Microsoft Project and Visio Availability on UFApps

Please be advised that Microsoft Project and Visio will no longer be offered through UFApps starting December 18, 2024. This change is due to licensing restrictions that prevent the virtualization of these applications for concurrent use by multiple users.

For students who require access to Visio Professional and Project Professional, the University of Florida provides an alternative solution through the Azure Dev Tools for Teaching program. This program allows students in STEM and related fields to obtain individual licenses for these powerful tools at no cost.

To access your free licenses, students can register through the Azure Dev Tools for Teaching program. Detailed instructions on how to register and download the software are available at: https://info.apps.ufl.edu/instructions-to-register-to-azure-dev-tools-for-teaching/. Further information about the Azure Dev Tools for Teaching program can be found on the Microsoft FAQ page: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/education-hub/azure-dev-tools-teaching/program-faq#azure-for-students.

This transition ensures compliance with Microsoft licensing terms and allows for a more sustainable and user-focused approach to software distribution within the University of Florida’s e-learning ecosystem.

ArcGIS Pro Login Update for UFApps Users Starting November 22nd

Users accessing ArcGIS Pro through UFApps will experience a new login procedure starting Friday, November 22nd. Esri, the vendor for ArcGIS Pro, is implementing a security update that will require users to sign in with their GatorLink account when launching the application.

This change enhances security and streamlines account management for University of Florida students and faculty utilizing ArcGIS Pro for their academic and research needs. Detailed login instructions are available to guide you through this simple process. Please refer to the instructions provided by the UF Department of Geography: https://www.geoplan.ufl.edu/software/esri-login-instructions/.

This update is part of the University of Florida’s ongoing effort to improve the security and functionality of its e-learning resources and ensure a seamless experience for all users of UFApps.

Horizon Platform to Replace Citrix, Enhancing UFApps for an Improved E-Learning Experience

Exciting news for UFApps users! Starting in Fall 2024, UFIT is upgrading the UFApps service by replacing the existing Citrix technology with the advanced Horizon platform solution. This significant upgrade is designed to create a superior virtual desktop environment, enhancing the overall University of Florida e-learning experience.

The Horizon platform will offer a more integrated virtual desktop, where all applications are readily accessible. A key improvement is the enhanced file management system, which will allow users to save and access their files more easily across various devices. This enhancement is aimed at providing a more flexible and user-friendly experience for both instructors and students engaged in online learning at the University of Florida.
