The land on which the Environmental Learning Center resides was acquired in 2001 and has proudly carried the name Environmental Learning Center for over a decade, even as the surrounding park transitioned to Jordan Creek Park. This location boasts a rich history of community engagement and natural stewardship. Prior to becoming the Environmental Learning Center under Lake Metroparks’ guidance, the site was known and cherished as Camp Klein, a United Methodist Church camp that operated from 1955 to 1997. Many local residents fondly recall formative experiences and lasting memories created during their time at Camp Klein.
Following its closure as Camp Klein, Lake Metroparks embraced the opportunity to transform the property, leveraging federal grant funding to create the vibrant Environmental Learning Center we know today. The building itself, now the heart of the Environmental Learning Center, was originally the main hall of Camp Klein.
