Discovering Support and Success: Aditi’s Journey at Penn with the Weingarten Learning Center

Hello, I’m Carola Agostini, a freshman from the Class of 2025 in the College of Arts and Sciences. Like many of you reading this, I’m navigating life at Penn. Before arriving, I, too, watched countless videos depicting student life here. Now, halfway through my second semester, and thanks to the support of University Life, I have the opportunity to share student stories, offering a glimpse into the real Penn experience beyond just a day.

My first Student Spotlight features Aditi Singh. Aditi began her journey as a tutor in her freshman year, focusing on math and science – subjects she affectionately calls her “STEM nerd” passions. As a fellow tutor, I was eager to meet Aditi, having heard about her resilience and achievements. While I felt a bit nervous before our interview, Aditi immediately put me at ease. She’s simply one of those people with whom conversation flows effortlessly. We connected as peers, and she graciously shared her story with me.

Aditi’s Story: Finding Strength in Tutoring and Community

Early Days and Passion for STEM

Aditi’s journey at Penn began with a strong academic drive, particularly in STEM fields. Her enthusiasm for math and science led her to tutoring, a role she embraced from her freshman year. This early involvement in academic support services laid the foundation for her growth and connection within the university community.

Facing Personal Hardship

During her sophomore year, Aditi faced a significant personal challenge. Her best friend, who had become her roommate, began struggling with mental health issues. Unfortunately, due to difficult circumstances, Aditi’s friend had to take a leave of absence from Penn. This event deeply impacted Aditi, forcing her to navigate a period of personal adjustment and learn to cope without her closest companion. “I think people underestimate how sad things can make you,” she reflected, emphasizing the profound sense of loss she experienced. “I was devastated.”

Tutoring as a Lifeline

Looking out of her residence hall window, Aditi felt lost and uncertain about the future. Mornings became a struggle, often spent retreating back to bed, hoping to sleep through the days. Despite her sadness and feelings of instability, Aditi remained committed to her studies, driven by a promise to her parents and herself to maintain her grades. Gradually, she found solace in the routine and purpose that her tutoring position provided. Tutoring became a daily anchor, a constant in her life that offered a sense of accomplishment and direction. It was something she excelled at, providing a much-needed boost during a challenging time.

“It was right up my alley, I could do this and do it well. I didn’t have to worry about what came next.”

The Weingarten Learning Center’s Role

Amidst this period of uncertainty, Aditi’s dedication and skill as a tutor were recognized within the Weingarten Learning Center. Valerie Wrenn, the Associate Tutoring Director at the Weingarten Learning Center, offered Aditi the position of lead math tutor. This opportunity arrived at a pivotal moment in Aditi’s journey. “That news was way bigger for me than it would’ve been without the hardships,” Aditi explained. “It was something, something to hold on to. You wake up one day and the sun is brighter.” The Weingarten Learning Center, through its supportive staff and opportunities for growth, played a crucial role in Aditi’s recovery and renewed sense of purpose.

Becoming a Lead Math Tutor: A Turning Point

The promotion to lead math tutor marked a significant turning point for Aditi. This wasn’t just a step up professionally; it was a validation of her abilities and a powerful affirmation during a period of personal healing. The responsibility and recognition associated with the lead tutor role provided Aditi with a renewed sense of confidence and focus. It solidified her connection to the Weingarten Learning Center and the supportive community it fostered. This opportunity, offered by Valerie Wrenn at the Weingarten Learning Center, became instrumental in her journey towards growth and resilience.

The Broader Penn Experience and Seeking Support at Weingarten

Talking with Aditi became a highlight in my own week, which, like many students, had been particularly tough. Our conversation, sharing our struggles openly, was genuinely therapeutic. As Aditi pointed out, Penn is undeniably challenging. There’s no sugarcoating the academic rigor and personal pressures. The ‘Day in the Life’ videos we often watch tend to showcase only the highlight reels, the best moments.

As a community, we are actively working to dismantle the ‘Penn Face’ – the pressure to appear constantly perfect and untroubled. We want every student to know that it is absolutely okay to not be okay. Seeking help is a sign of strength, and we strongly encourage it. While Penn can feel overwhelming at times, there are incredible people and resources readily available to support you. Students like Aditi, who bring light and positivity, and dedicated staff members like Valerie at the Weingarten Learning Center, are here to guide and support you. The Weingarten Learning Center stands as a vital resource for academic enrichment and personal support, offering tutoring, workshops, and a welcoming environment for all students.

Conclusion: Embrace Support and Find Your Light at Penn

Aditi’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of seeking support and finding your passions, even amidst challenges. Her journey at Penn, significantly shaped by her involvement with tutoring and the Weingarten Learning Center, exemplifies resilience and the power of community. If there’s one key takeaway from Aditi’s experience, it’s to proactively seek help when needed, surround yourself with supportive individuals, and engage in activities that bring you joy and purpose. The Weingarten Learning Center is a cornerstone of support at Penn, ready to assist students in their academic and personal growth. Embrace the resources available, find your community, and discover your own light at Penn.

Until next time,

Carola Agostini
